Luma Monteiro
United Kingdom
Luma has worked in many different facets of the wine industry – as a sommelier, in wine distribution, as a wine educator and as a judge at Decanter, IWSC, and SWA, to name but a few. She now works in marketing at a Davy’s Wine Merchants, as well as running one of the UK’s most popular wine content platforms on Instagram (@wineriaofficial). The aim of her Instagram presence and content is “making wine accessible to a diverse audience.” Luma has been inspired by women in wine including Jane Anson, Jancis Robinson OBE MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW, but has found that as a Black, Latin American woman, she has faced additional barriers and hurdles in the industry. She seeks, through pursuing the MW, through her multi-faceted presence in the industry, and through her attendance and speaking at conferences and events organised by groups such as Be Inclusive Hospitality, to become the Black, Latin American female role model in wine for others like her that she lacked when she first entered the trade.
“I feel there is finally an opportunity open for wine diversity, and I feel like we have with this kind of initiative a bright future ahead of us. You need to see the physical manifestation of your dream - and this is what I feel winning the golden vines award”
